Is tap water safe for babies?

Pediatricians and the AAP answer: it depends. Here's what you should know before mixing formula or filling your child's bottle.

Is tap water safe for babies?

For many Hispanic American parents, the doubt comes from tradition: 'Back home we know you don't drink from the tap.' But in the United States, the answer isn't that simple, and it depends a lot on where you live.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends using safe drinking water to mix formula. The problem is defining 'safe.'

Babies are especially vulnerable to three common contaminants in tap water: lead (causes irreversible neurological problems), nitrates (can cause 'blue baby syndrome' in infants under 6 months), and PFAS (hormonal and developmental problems).

Homes built before 1986 very likely have lead pipes. The EPA recommends letting cold water run for 30 seconds before using it, especially if it's been sitting for hours. But this doesn't eliminate the problem, only reduces it.

The safest option: install a reverse osmosis system with remineralization. It removes dangerous contaminants and returns the minerals babies do need (calcium, magnesium).

If you don't have the budget for a complete system, at a minimum use a filter certified by NSF/ANSI Standard 53 for lead and PFAS. Basic carbon filters (Brita) are NOT enough for baby formula.
